Eco-friendly deodorant is better for your body and reduces negative impacts on the environment and people.
But do more sustainable deodorants work?
They work exactly as intended—which is to say they deodorize, but they don’t stop you from sweating. And they shouldn’t! Our bodies are meant to sweat, but traditional toxic, conventional deodorants have stuck us with the false idea that sweat = bad.
So, have you tossed your notions of finding an eco-friendly antiperspirant deodorant?
Then let’s stick it to tradition!
For this list, we’ve focused on featuring brands that have a well-rounded approach to sustainability. We’ve looked for cruelty-free (ideally vegan), non-toxic options that have ethically sourced ingredients and a conscious approach to packaging.
Through our new Brand Rating System, we’ll be extending our consideration set to include climate action, labor and human rights issues; and much more. Learn more about this here and look out for rated deodorant brands below – they’ll be added as they’re rated.
We independently research all featured brands and we ask them to confirm their claims. In many cases we personally review recommended products. This post contains affiliate links which means we may earn a commission if you buy something. Learn more here.
The Best Eco-friendly Deodorant Brands
For those looking for a quick answer to sustainable stink-free pits, our top eco-friendly deodorant maker is Ethique, whose compostable cardboard tube form also makes them a zero-waste deodorant.
If you’re looking for a plastic-free option, we’re purring over Meow Meow Tweet, a company leading the world in vegan skincare for years. As an added BO-nus, they use certified organic and fair trade ingredients to make them.
Fat and the Moon has us over the moon with its glass jar deodorant formula with organic ingredients and zero toxins.

Meow Meow Tweet’s Cruelty-Free Eco-Friendly Deodorant
Meow Meow Tweet makes small-batch deodorant in a zero waste cardboard stick or glass-packaged cream.
No matter which you choose, the packaging is 100% recyclable, but for a genuinely environment-friendly deodorant, we recommend compostable cardboard sticks. Plus, then you don’t have to use your fingers to apply!
Sustainable deodorant packaging aside, they’re sustainable for all types of skin, too, thanks to their sensitive skin-friendly baking soda-free deodorant variety.
All their deodorants are 100% vegan, cruelty-free, palm oil free, and 100% natural—with most ingredients also being certified USDA organic.
But MMT’s huge fan base isn’t just because of that. It’s also because, like all their highly effective products, it’s an eco-friendly deodorant that works—really!
The SJ team has sampled and sweat-tested the sticks ourselves and must say, we’re impressed.
Not only does the delightfully colorful tube brighten up our bathroom, but the light, easy-on solid deodorant work for hours and hours, even on a hot day.
About Meow Meow Tweet
Meow Meow Tweet is a small-batch skin care company offering a cute range of body care, facial care, soaps, and deodorants.
All their products are 100% cruelty-free, certified organic or natural, vegan, and palm oil free.
They source all of their ingredients ethically, including cocoa butter, shea butter, sugar, coconut oil, and coffee, which are all from fair trade suppliers.
All their packaging is 100% recyclable, and they support an impressive number of charities with ongoing monthly donations.
Not to tweet their horn, but they’re definitely one of the most sustainable deodorant brands around!

Ethique’s Sustainable Deodorant That Actually Works
If you haven’t been able to tell yet, we’ve been big fans of Ethique since the days when they were one of the first companies to put zero-waste shampoo bars on the map.
These palm-free deodorants are both practical and one of the most sustainable options we’ve seen. They’re certified palm oil-free, cruelty-free, aluminum-free, and even baking soda-free.
In addition to anti-inflammatory zinc oxide, jojoba oil, almond oil, and essential oils, they also (uniquely, may we add) have bamboo, a natural absorbent that can soak up 200% of its weight in sweat and oil.
So while they’re not a sustainable antiperspirant deodorant, they will make your puts feel significantly drier because it absorbs the sweat quickly.
At least that’s what we found in our experience. While we’d have good luck finding other eco deodorants that stop odors, they typically fall a little short on the moisture department, which sets Ethique apart.
About Ethique
Ethique is a New Zealand-based Certified B Corp that makes all kinds of hair care products, facial scrubs, and soap in zero waste bar or cardboard stick form.
Everything is also vegan, cruelty-free, palm oil free, and mostly organic.
The third-party audits required to maintain their B-Corp status ensure the supply chain is held to top-notch environmental and ethical standards.
Above and beyond that, this brand is certified carbon-neutral (though they actually offset 120% of operations) and donates the higher amount of either 2% of yearly revenue or 20% of profit to charities.

Fat and the Moon
Fat and the Moon is yet to be rated.
Fat and the Moon’s Sustainable Coconut Deodorant
Fat and the Moon has landed among the stars with its aluminum-free deodorant cream.
We’ve tested the Aluminum Free Deodorant Cream and can attest to the high-quality formula of organic ingredients that don’t leave behind chalky streaks.
The natural deodorant doesn’t include any parabens, sulfates, phthalates, or harmful chemicals.
The deodorant cream fights body odor-causing bacteria with coconut oil and baking soda. Natural ingredients like arrowroot powder, beeswax, and organic essential oils help absorb moisture.
Or, for a baking soda-free deodorant, go with the Sensitive Pit Deodorant, which they promise won’t cause rashes on even the most sensitive skin.
Both options come in a reusable glass jar with the fresh scent of black pepper, bergamot, and a bit of citrus.
This unique scent is one of our favorite things about it. It’s refreshing and subtle—as we tend not to like scents that are too overpowering—but also lasting. We can catch whiffs of it (instead of ourselves) hours later!
About Fat and the Moon
Woman-owned Fat and the Moon is a beauty brand that crafts their catalog of balms, lotions, face masks, oils, and natural deodorants in Grass Valley, California.
Each product is made-to-order, ensuring high-quality freshness and minimal waste.
You can find clearly stated ingredients on all their skincare products and while not all ingredients are organic, they are 100% natural. Fat and the Moon never use palm oil.
Each item is shipped in plastic-free packaging and recycled materials, and Fat and the Moon contributes to nonprofit organizations whenever possible.

EcoRoots’ Most Sustainable Deodorant
If you want an eco-friendly deodorant that works, look no further than EcoRoots.
We’ve tested a whole range of sustainable beauty products, many of which are from EcoRoots and we can safely say they’re one of our favorite sustainable brands.
There are two natural deodorants to choose from, each with formulas that reduce odor without blocking your pores.
If you prefer eco-friendly roll-on deodorant, you can select scents like Coconut, Lavender, and Eucalyptus Mint, all packaged in compostable cardboard tubes.
We tried this one as well, and found it also left us feeling fresh and fragrant throughout the day. Even during intense workouts, it stood tall, proving that natural can be just as effective as conventional deodorants.
We really appreciate that EcoRoots makes the vegan choice to include wildcrafted candelilla wax over beeswax and our pits love the added shea butter, which helps moisturize and soothe.
You can also select the Deodorant Cream designed for sensitive skin and shipped in a recyclable glass jar. This option comes in the same scents, alongside Citrus, Rose Geranium, and a fragrance-free option.
Both of the formulas are silicone, preservative, and paraben-free. The deodorants are completely palm oil-free, using only natural ingredients.
About EcoRoots
EcoRoots goes above and beyond when it comes to ethical cleaning, beauty, bath, and skincare products.
The Colorado-based zero waste online store uses natural, vegan, cruelty-free, and plastic-free ingredients. Some options do include palm oil and beeswax, however.
The zero waste shampoos, oils, lotions, and natural deodorants are made in the United States—all shipped in plastic-free packaging.
EcoRoots also contributes a portion of its sales to the Ocean Conservancy as per their 1% For the Planet commitment.
My Personal Review of EcoRoots Deodorant:
“I’m a big fan of the Rose Geranium and Coconut. Works really well (except maybe if your doing intense exercise, you might want to add a bit more product). The scents are subtle, unlike all the conventional Axe-type deos. And the product is creamy (it does have a slightly grainy texture, probably because of the natural formulation), more than other brands I’ve tried, I found the application really easy, especially in summer the product becomes very soft. The only drawback (a small one), and this goes for all deodorants in a jar, is having to wash my hands after using the product.”

Rainwater Botanicals’ Earth-Friendly Deodorant
Rainwater Botanicals is one of the best sustainable deodorant brands that produce high-quality, small-batch products.

Each & Every Best Natural Sustainable Deodorant
Each & Every makes a “Worry-Free” deodorant.
Whether you’re concerned about the poor recyclability of deodorant tubes, animal testing, or aluminum and other toxic ingredients, they’ve got the solution.
These cruelty-free, vegan, and baking soda-free tubes contain no aluminum, parabens, synthetic fragrances or gluten.
There are only five key ingredients, all rated low risk by the EWG’s Skin Deep database. These include coconut oil, tapioca starch, earth wax, Dead Sea salt, and antioxidant salt.
In fact, they worked hand in hand using the EWG’s fantastic resources to develop this stink-free sustainable formula, and feel they accomplished just that.
They then use high-quality essential oils to craft one of their many scents, like Vanilla, Juniper & Mint, Citrus & Vetiver, Coconut & Lime, and more.
Their plastic-tube deodorants are made from plastic, although they are recyclable, and Each & Every has implemented a Recycling Program, so you can send in your empties to ensure they get properly recycled.
About Each & Every
Each & Every was born when Lauren and Mikah combined their knowledge and backgrounds in the beauty industry with frustration at the lack of better natural deodorant options.
Now, this sustainable brand operates with the goal of making “each and every person feel good about the products they use on their body. Without compromise.”
In addition to deodorant, they now also make perfumes.
Why Choose Environmentally Friendly Deodorants?
Heaps of off-the-shelf antiperspirant deodorants use aluminum. It’s used to prevent sweating. It does this by plugging the ducts on our skin’s surface, which contains a clammy underarm and the spread of odor-causing bacteria.
This would be a great solution if it wasn’t unnatural. Unfortunately, we are mammals, and that means we sweat. It’s how we stay cool and eliminate toxins, so stopping sweating is definitely not the answer.
Some studies have also shown that aluminum induces estrogen-like effects once absorbed, which may increase the likelihood of breast cancer. The jury is still out on whether this is conclusive. However, it’s probably best to avoid exposing ourselves until more research is done.
Plus, aluminum’s reaction with your body’s sweat is what causes those awful yellow pit stains on your favorite white dress.
But it’s also not just aluminum that’s the problem.
There is a host of other synthetic, chemical, and other harmful chemicals (e.g., sulfates, phthalates, and parabens, which are known to affect hormone function, among other adverse effects) found in almost every single off-the-shelf deodorant.
That’s why we always opt for a genuinely natural, eco-friendly deodorant alternative. They’re healthier and less damaging to the environment.
As a rule of thumb, if you can’t quickly understand the ingredients in your deodorant, then our advice would be to steer clear.
If there’s aluminum, parabens, synthetics, phthalates, sulfates, and any other ingredients containing the likes of “poly,” “-eth-” or “oxy,” then it’s not genuinely safe for you or the planet.
With that said, we hope this list gives you a few options to try that satisfy precisely that. For those we didn’t personally test ourselves, we poured over customer reviews to ensure we were including truly sustainable deodorants that do the job.
Feel free to share this list of eco-friendly deodorants with a friend that needs a little underarm love!
